What is Pilates?

“Pilates” is a series of exercises with low repetitions and set progressions that are designed to work your bodies' deep postural muscles. These muscles connect well with the bodies myofascial slings; large movement muscles and they stabilise key joints.  In addition these muscles aid the bodies' unconscious systems and help provide efficient functioning of the body in conjunction with the diaphragm and the lungs.

Pilates may enhance your posture as well as improve your strength and stability within key joints around your body. Originally Pilates was researched and developed by Joseph H Pilates to improve his own health; the health of immobile veterans of war and to help improve the performance of dancers in New York city. Now exercises have been developed by the medical profession and physiotherapists to improve the health of clients.

All exercises have a firm set of principles and are performed with detail.  Pilates classes are organised in small groups so that teachers can provide more specialised exercises for their clients. Larger classes of 10 -15 are also suitable for clients that are healthy and just want to maintain fitness. A medical history and disclaimer is common in Pilates so that instructors can offer their clients safe exercises. For clients that do have mechanical spine issues it is still important to maintain movement within their neural systems this is why exercise sets with low repetitions suit this group of individuals.
